Chapter 37

For the remainder of the evening, and into the early morning hours, Sledge shifted gears to Kim’s case now that Trixie was settled in his place and made herself at home. She had kept to the spare room and only made brief appearances when hungry or thirsty, which suited Sledge fine since he wanted her to feel comfortable.

Marko Vega was a person of major interest and one who would hopefully be the key to finding the missing girl. Detective Wentworth painted the man as a slippery fish who always managed to wiggle out of jams using outside sources. He was the next bad actor who Sledge believed would connect the localized criminal network to a much larger player that bankrolled their operation.

Hours ticked by like minutes as Sledge poured through research on who Marko Vega was, and the sort of business dealings in which he was involved. His web search provided little to go on as not much was listed about the notorious felon. With bits and pieces scattered throughout the internet, there weren’t too many dots to connect.

Frustrated, Sledge pinched the bridge of his nose, sighed, and then leaned back in his desk chair. His eyes were strained from staring at the computer screens for hours on end. He ran on fumes and his body was tired, but how could Sledge rest when a girl’s life hinged on him being able to find her before it was too late?

Needing to clear his head and gain some clarity, Sledge forced his body out of the chair where he was camped, grabbed his favorite book, Manhattan Heights, and strolled into the hallway. His boots shuffled along the floor to the kitchen where he deposited the book on the table, and then made a cup of coffee and waited as it brewed.

He checked the time and groused at it being after 3:00 a.m. His efforts were commendable but that meant little if he wasn’t able to advance the case forward. Each second that went by meant his chances for success in rescuing Kim were diminished. That couldn’t happen.

The coffee finished brewing with a hiss. After pouring a cup of the dark roast, Sledge carried the hot mug to the table and took a seat in one of the chairs. As he sipped on the scorching brew, Sledge cracked the book open and stared at a photo wedged into the crease.

It was a picture of a smiling, happy family, a husband, a wife, and a little girl. They were huddled close together with the small girl wedged between the man and the woman. The child was the focus of Sledge’s interest. He had spent countless hours reliving the moment when he got the photo, and who the girl was. So much regret and heartache were tied to the image that it broke his heart. Few things in the world destroyed a man like Sledge, but knowing the pain he’d caused that family some twelve years prior haunted him daily.

He plucked the picture from the book and brought it closer.
